What are requirements of Vietnam transit visa?

Article 10, Chapter 2 of the Law No. 47/2014/QH13 which was effective on January 1, 2015 regulated on foreigners’ entry into, exit from, transit resides in Vietnam, those fully meeting the below conditions can do a transit in Vietnam:

  • Having a passport with at least 06 months of validity;

  • Having a ticket suitable to his/her trip to the third country;

  • Having the third country’s visa, except those who are exempted from visas.

Can foreigners transit in Vietnam without holding a visa? Except for many case that are eligible for visa exemptions, they must meet these following conditions:

  • their layover in Vietnam is less than 24 hours, AND

  • they stay within the transit areas during their layover.

Note: the agencies competent will decide the transit areas to manage the international border gates. If you are traveling by air, it is the transit area at the international airports and if you are on a cruise, it is at the international seaports in which your ships are anchoring.

However, you NEED to apply for a visa if your layover in Vietnam is more than 24 hours and/or you are leaving the transit area for taking luggage for the next flight or a short sightseeing tour in the city you are transiting.

Obviously, remember to check with your airplanes in order to know your Vietnam transit visa requirements, ask them whether you need to leave the transit area to take your luggage at the transit airport or not.

How to get Vietnam Transit visa?

Once again, we remind you that you will need a Vietnam transit visa in the event that you are not eligible for Vietnam visa exemption and you will be transiting in Vietnam for more than 24 hours OR your luggage is not gone through to your final destination and you have to leave the transit area for taking your luggage and check-in for your next flight.
